The study of glial cells is one of the topics raising more interest in recent years, within the field of neuroscience. Glial cells (astrocytes, microglia, oligodendrocytes, neural stem cells, ependymal cells, Schwann cells and ganglionic satellite cells) provide trophic and metabolic support for neurons, participating in the maintenance of brain function under physiological conditions. In addition, increasing evidence suggests that glial cells play a crucial role in the processes of neurodegeneration and regeneration of the nervous system, being involved in the pathogenesis and development of certain neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's or multiple sclerosis. Many research groups worldwide are focusing their efforts on uncovering the molecular and functional characteristics of the different glial subtypes, tackling its study through the implementation and development of different technologies and using a variety of experimental models.
The Spanish Glial Network (RGE) was founded in 1997 by Manuel Nieto-Sampedro and Bernardo Castellano. Nationally, we envisaged the need to establish a network of different Spanish groups involved in the study of glial cells. The intended purpose was to foster cooperation and joint activities to promote interaction between different laboratories, with the objective of making better use of human and research resources. Since 2013, RGE has been recognized as a group by the Spanish Society for Neuroscience (SENC). Currently, RGE-SENC brings together over a hundred research groups, including CSIC (Spanish Research Council) research staff, university professors, fellows and PhD students in Neuroscience. The composition of each group, its research lines, published papers, etc. are available on this website.
