Dear gliologists,

Achucarro Basque Center for Neuroscience in Bilbao, Spain is organizing a second edition of “Achucarro International Glia School”, an advanced course on biology of glial cells. The theme of our 2020 edition is the role of glial cells in the pathologies of the central nervous system. The course will consist of four sessions, one per glial cell type (astrocytes, microglia, oligodendroglia, and neural stem cells) given by internationally recognized experts in the field.
Confirmed speakers for this session are:

Astrocyte session: Isidro Ferrer (Barcelona, Spain), Marta Navarrete (Madrid, Spain), Milos Pekny (Göteborg, Sweden), Alexei Verkhratsky (Manchester, UK)

Neural stem cell session: Juanma Encinas (Achucarro, Bilbao), Angela Gritti (Milano, Italy), Emmanuelle Huillard (Paris, France), María Llorens (Madrid, Spain)

Microglia session: Michael Heneka (Bonn, Germany), Inge Huitinga (Amsterdam, The Netherlands), Estibaliz Capetillo (Achucarro, Bilbao), Amanda Sierra (Achucarro, Bilbao)

Oligodendroglia session: Charles French-Constant (Edinburgh, UK), Klaus Nave (Göttingen, Germany), Don Mahad (Edinburgh, UK), Maria Kukley (Achucarro, Bilbao).

Additionally, to foster the Students´creativity and project design skills, two brainstorming sessions will be implemented:
1. Scientific project elaboration: small groups of Students will be assigned a topic (relevant to a particular cell type) and asked to design an experimental project to address a role of one of glial cell types in a particular CNS pathology, under supervision of two mentors (speakers).
2.      Current project discussion: Students will present their own research project in a poster and critically discuss the data with the mentors.

These sessions will allow the students to establish close contact with the speakers, which may lead to future collaborations.
In addition, investigators from Achucarro Basque Center for Neuroscience will perform practical demonstrations of state-of-the-art techniques such as calcium imaging, electrophysiology, two-photon imaging etc.
The first edition of the School (2018) was extremely successful in that it brought together 30 researchers and students from Australia, India, Ukraine, Iran, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, France, Hungary, Italy, Portugal, Holland, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Austria and Spain.
